Getting started on Android

How do I set up Keepsake on Android?

Install Keepsake from the download page, then either create a vault with a new password or restore an existing one from your cloud folder or 24-word Recovery Kit. Print the Recovery Kit if the vault is new. Scanning is built in: the camera detects page edges, deskews, and runs OCR on the phone, so no image is uploaded anywhere.

Create or restore

  1. Install Keepsake from Google Play (see the download page for the current status).
  2. Choose Create new vault — or Restore, if you already use Keepsake elsewhere and have sync set up (the phone rebuilds the whole vault from your cloud folder).
  3. Pick a strong password and save the Recovery Kit when it is shown. It appears exactly once.

Capture documents with the camera

  • Tap Add, then photograph the document. ML Kit reads the text on the phone — the image is never uploaded anywhere.
  • Keepsake suggests the category, expiry date, document number and tags; adjust if needed and save.
  • You can also share any PDF or image from another app straight into Keepsake.

Make it convenient

  • Enable biometric unlock in Settings. The key is protected by the Android Keystore hardware; your fingerprint never leaves the device.
  • Set your renewal country in Settings so expiry alerts include the right official renewal links.
  • Turn on sync to pair with your PC and browser.

Travelling?

Pack a Travel Mode capsule before you leave — your passport and tickets behind a short PIN, fully offline, auto-expiring after the trip.

Language, digest and asking questions

  • Settings → 🌐 Language switches the app between English and اردو. Android mirrors the layout right-to-left for Urdu. The choice is stored on the phone only — it is not part of your encrypted vault and never syncs.
  • Any document → 📝 Digest (Premium) shows the key facts and the document's own most important sentences. Every line is copied from the document; nothing is rewritten. See Understanding a document quickly.
  • Settings → 💬 Ask your vault (see Asking your vault a question) answers questions like when does my passport expire by quoting your own documents, entirely on the phone.

On Android these answer and summarise using the same shared rules as the web app, so the same document gives the same answer on both. The optional on-device AI phrasing and the browser translator are web-only for now — Android gets them when the platform equivalents are shipped and tested.
