Understanding a document quickly (digest & translation)

A two-page letter from a council, a bank or an embassy usually contains three or four sentences that actually matter. Digest finds them, using the text OCR already read when you added the document.

Open any document → 📝 Digest (Premium).

What you get

  • Key facts — document type, number, issue and expiry dates, issuing authority. These come from the same extraction rules that file your documents, so they are fields Keepsake has already identified, not guesses.
  • Key points — the sentences from the document that carry the dates, amounts and reference numbers, shown in the order they appear.
  • Reading time, so you know whether the rest is worth your evening.

The one promise worth reading twice

Every line of a digest is copied from your document. Nothing is rewritten, shortened into new wording, or generated. A paraphrase of a visa condition or a tax demand can change its meaning, and a vault that quietly rewrites your documents would be worse than one that says nothing at all.

That is also why a digest is never stored: it is recalculated from the document each time you open it, so it cannot drift away from what the document says.

Translation (Urdu, Arabic, Hindi → English)

If the document is in Urdu, Arabic or Hindi script, the digest offers 🌐 Translate to English.

  • The translation runs on your device, using your browser's own translator (Chrome or Edge 138 and later). The language pack is downloaded and managed by the browser.
  • Your document is never sent to a translation service. If your browser has no on-device translator, Keepsake says so and offers nothing else — it will not quietly upload the text instead.
  • The result is labelled machine translation, for gist only, and Show original brings back the document's own words in one click. For anything legal or financial, the original wording is what counts.

Limits, honestly

  • Quality is bounded by OCR quality. If the scan is poor, the digest is working from poor text — see the OCR benchmark for how we measure that.
  • A digest is a reading aid, not advice, and not a legal reading.
  • Documents with no readable text (a photo of a passport page with no text layer that OCR could not read) get an honest "nothing to summarise" instead of an invented summary.
  • Digest is a Premium feature, like the other document-intelligence tools. Translation availability depends on your browser, not on your license.
