Your Recovery Kit
What is the Keepsake Recovery Kit, and what happens if I lose it?
The Recovery Kit is a 24-word BIP-39 phrase generated when a vault is created, printable with a QR code. It wraps the same master key as the password, so it can unlock the vault on its own. Keepsake is zero-knowledge: nobody can reset a password. Lose both the password and the kit and the documents are mathematically unrecoverable. It is free on every tier.
What it is
When you create a vault, Keepsake generates a 24-word recovery phrase (BIP-39) and offers a printable PDF with the words and a QR code. The phrase wraps the same master key as your password — it is a second, independent way to unlock your vault.
Why it matters
Keepsake is zero-knowledge: nobody can reset your password — not support, not a server, no one. If you forget the password and have no Recovery Kit, the encrypted data is mathematically unrecoverable. The kit is the safety net, and it is free on every tier, forever.
How to store it
- Print it and keep it where you keep passports or cash — a drawer, a safe, a bank locker.
- Do not photograph it into your camera roll or store it in notes/email — anyone with the phrase can open your vault.
- For extra resilience, keep two copies in different places.
Using it
- On the unlock screen choose Forgot password / Use Recovery Kit.
- Type the 24 words (or scan the QR on supported devices).
- Set a new password. Your documents are not re-encrypted — the phrase simply unwraps the master key and wraps it under your new password.
Rotating it
If a kit may have been seen, generate a new one in Settings → Recovery Kit. The old phrase stops working immediately.
